Surveying the new avenues of artistic expression explored by Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) and his circle during their lengthy visits to the Breton villages of Pont-Aven and Le Pouldu during the late 1880s and early 1890s, this catalogue presents 25 paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and ceramic pieces by the celebrated French artist along with some 165 works by Emile Bernard, Paul Serusier, Jan Verkade, Charles Filiger, Armand Seguin and 18 other figures, the selection including landscapes, figure studies, still lifes, portraits and religious compositions embodying a new aesthetic based on simplified forms and non-naturalistic coloration. The first volume of the two-part catalogue features fine color reproductions of the exhibited pieces and a detailed account of Gauguin's four sojourns in Brittany from 1886 to 1894 while the second volume provides reference illustrations and individual discussions of the works, the majority of them drawn from private collections.
