"THE TALENTED INTRUDER": WYNDHAM LEWIS IN CANADA, 1939-1945. Catharine M. Mastin et al. Art Gallery of Windsor, 1992. 200 pp. with 180 ills. (19 col.). 30 x 23 cm. ISBN 0919837379 In English.
An exhaustive exploration of a little-studied aspect of Lewis's career, this catalogue surveys 80 drawings and 21 paintings (most of them previously unexhibited) executed by the well-known British painter, novelist and critic (1882-1957) during his wartime sojourn in Ontario, the selection chiefly comprising portraits and fantastic semi-abstract figural compositions, landscapes and religious images. Includes a detailed chronicle of Lewis's difficult years of self-imposed "exile" in Canada, a discussion of his writings of the period, and a lengthy examination of an enigmatic series of lyrical bathing scenes produced by the artist in 1941 and 1942.
