An extensive examination of the little-studied oeuvre of Italian-born architect Sabatini, this scholarly catalogue presents photographs, drawings and plans for architectural and ornamental projects undertaken by Sabatini in his role as architect to the Spanish courts of Charles III and Charles IV, including designs for the remodeling and decoration of royal palaces and the construction of churches, hospitals and fortifications. Augmented by detailed commentaries on the featured projects, 17 essays discuss such topics as Sabatini's early years as a disciple of Vanvitelli and Fuga in Rome, his activities as director of interior decoration for the Madrid court, his achievements as a military engineer, and the relationship of his works to those of his contemporary Juan de Villanueva.
