LES VINGT, LA LIBRE ESTHETIQUE: HONDERD JAAR LATER/CENT ANS APRES (Les XX, La Libre Esthetique: One Hundred Years Later). Musees royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Brussels, 1993. 588 pp. with 347 ills. (40 col.). 28 x 21 cm. Bilingual in French and Dutch (excerpts from critical texts in French, Dutch, English or German only).
Marking the anniversaries of two exhibition societies that were instrumental in the promotion of progressive art in Belgium during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this catalogue documents more than 200 works from the collections of the Musees royaux that were originally presented in the annual salons organized by Les XX, an influential group of avant-garde Belgian artists who exhibited together from 1884 to 1893, and by its successor La Libre Esthetique (1894-1914), a broader international association of some 100 chiefly Neo-Impressionist, Nabi and Symbolist painters and sculptors. An extensive chronology of the histories of the two groups prefaces illustrations of paintings, drawings and sculptures by such figures as Ensor, Khnopff, Redon, Rops, Seurat, Van Rysselberghe, Signac, Meunier, Minne and Rodin, many of the works accompanied by reprinted commentaries that illuminate their contemporary critical reception.
