Accompanying an exhibition of 135 manuscripts, sculptures, altarpieces, ceramic vessels, coins, musical instruments and other diverse religious and secular objects dating mainly from the 12th to the 15th century, this catalogue focuses on the cultural and political history of the route across northern Spain taken by travelers to the famed pilgrimage site of Santiago de Compostela. Illustrated with photographs of towns and churches along the route and many narrative images from the important 13th-century illuminated manuscript Cantigas de Santa Maria, eleven essays discuss such issues as the impact of the pilgrimages on the art and economy of the region, the activities and motivations of women pilgrims, the interaction of French travelers with the native population, and the reception of the pilgrims in Santiago de Compostela.
