Focused on Zuccaro's rarely exhibited series of drawings depicting scenes from The Divine Comedy while also exploring the major fresco cycles initiated or completed by the influential Italian Mannerist (ca. 1540-1609), this scholarly catalogue presents color reproductions and detailed analyses of 89 illustrations for Dante's poem produced by Zuccaro in the late 1580s along with documentation of some 20 frescoes, preparatory drawings and oils by the artist. Included among fifteen essays are discussions of Zuccaro's career and stylistic development, examinations of his imagery in the context of Italian lyric poetry traditions, and individual evaluations of decorative projects undertaken by the artist in Rome, Florence, Caprarola and Loreto.
