This scholarly catalogue examines the interplay of image and text in 20th-century art from Cubism, Constructivism and Surrealism through Pop, Fluxus and Conceptual art, presenting illustrations of more than 170 diverse works by Warhol, Brecht, Beuys, Kabakov, Kruger, Gerz, Kosuth, Kelley and many other postwar figures as well as some 80 pieces by earlier artists including Braque, Malevich, Duchamp, Schwitters and Ernst. Discussing such topics as the relationship between aesthetic and linguistic systems, the history of visual poetry, and the experimental use of textual elements by Dada and Fluxus artists, fourteen essays (several of them reprinted) are augmented by some 30 texts that include statements by and interviews with the featured contemporary artists and critical commentaries on their works.
