Thoroughly surveying an internationally renowned collection of 20th-century Russian art, this catalogue documents 600 paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, collages and other works by some 100 artists, the selection emphasizing the pioneering achievements of such important early modern figures as Rodchenko, Malevich, Suetin, Exter, Filonov, Goncharova and Larionov while also including compositions by Komar and Melamid, Kabakov, Bulatov and other contemporary avant-garde artists. Good reproductions of most of the exhibited works are accompanied by critical profiles of the artists and four essays discussing the history of the collection, the origin and defining characteristics of early 20th-century Russian progressive art, and the rise of avant-garde movements in Moscow during the post-Stalin and pre-perestroika eras.
