ROGER HILTON. Hayward Gallery, London, 1993. Organized and published by South Bank Centre, London. 120 pp. with 123 ills. (81 col.). 28 x 22 cm. LC 95-199241 ISBN 1853321184 In English.
Documenting the first major review of Hilton's distinctive contribution to postwar abstract painting in Britain, this catalogue presents reproductions of 59 paintings, 27 gouaches and 16 drawings spanning the career of the noted British artist (1911-1975), including subtly disjointed abstractions based on simple shapes and dynamic color contrasts as well as expressive interpretations of the human figure and landscape forms. Brief critical commentaries on many of the featured works augment two essays that examine the interplay of abstraction and figuration in Hilton's oeuvre and discuss his painterly concerns in relation to the work of Mondrian and other continental and British artists of the 1940s and 50s.
