Fine color reproductions and individual examinations of the exhibited works are prefaced by five scholarly essays discussing the rise of the landscape painting as a vehicle for the expression of moral and cultural values, Turner's pioneering efforts to capture the complexity and evanescence of nature, the role of landscape imagery in the writings of Wordsworth, Austen and other authors, and the significance of the popularity of landscape sketching among amateur artists of the period.
