Illuminates the politicized artistic milieu of Italy under Mussolini through a presentation of works displayed in a series of Bergamo exhibitions mounted from 1939 to 1942 to counter the Fascist regime's promotion of propagandistic art. Full-page reproductions of more than 120 paintings produced primarily during the late 1930s and early 40s by Guttuso, Carra, Birolli, Severini, de Pisis, Donghi and many other figures are prefaced by eight essays discussing such topics as the political dimensions of figurative art during the period, the reflection of nationalistic themes in the works of the Novecento group, and the unusual role of government minister Giuseppe Bottai in the organization of the Bergamo exhibitions.
