Providing a substantial review of the diverse body of work produced from 1965 to 1993 by Art & Language, a pioneering group of British conceptual artists which since 1976 has consisted of Mel Ramsden (b. 1944) and Michael Baldwin (b. 1945), this catalogue presents illustrations of paintings, drawings, text pieces, photo-based images and mixed-media installations that range from blank monochromatic canvases and abstracted landscapes to schematic representations of museum interiors and portraits of Lenin executed in the style of Jackson Pollock. Accompanied by the libretto of Art & Language's 1983 comic opera Victorine, two substantial essays trace the progression of strategies utilized by the team in their critiques of modernist views of art and analyze the theoretical concerns informing their recent series of abstract and figurative paintings based on Courbet's famous nude study L'origine du monde.
