MIKE KELLEY: CATHOLIC TASTES. Elisabeth Sussman et al. Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 1993. Distributed by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York. 256 pp. with 283 ills. (60 col.). 24 x 17 cm. LC 93-13287 ISBN 0874270871 In English.
A detailed examination of the controversial oeuvre of well-known Los Angeles artist Kelley (b. 1954), this catalogue documents an exhibition of more than 150 diverse drawings, performance pieces, installations, sculptures, videos and other works produced from 1975 to 1992, ranging from "minimalist" birdhouses and assemblages of stuffed animals to scatological and sexually explicit cartoon images. Illustrations of the featured works accompany 14 critical texts that individually analyze many of Kelley's projects and performances and discuss the philosophical and cultural concerns underlying his disregard of aesthetic conventions and his irreverent explorations of the "sociopathology" of contemporary American life.
