A scholarly study of cultural and artistic interactions between Japan and Europe that focuses primarily on the complex Japanese response to Western civilization, this massive catalogue documents a diverse array of some 700 objects drawn from more than 150 international collections, including Japanese paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures (many of them depicting Europeans or executed in Western styles); books, maps, manuscripts and scientific instruments; ceramics, lacquerware, metalwork and other decorative pieces produced in Japan for export to Europe; and a small selection of works by Manet, Tissot and other European artists who were influenced by Japanese aesthetics. Fine reproductions and individual analyses of most of the exhibited works are prefaced by 16 essays that range from examinations of early European reports of Japan and the portrayal of foreigners in Nanban screen paintings to discussions of the development of Western styles in Japanese art of the Edo period and the impact of color woodblock prints from Japan on 19th-century European artists. A supplemental volume offers an anthology of ten essays addressing such topics as Japan's participation in international expositions from the 1860s to the 1930s, the art market of the early Meiji period, and the involvement of Japanese artists in the Dada movement.
