OP WILLEM DE KOONING: FROM THE HIRSHHORN MUSEUM COLLECTION. Judith Zilczer et al. Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., 1993. Showcasing the Hirshhorn Museum's unrivalled holdings of works by de Kooning, this catalogue features excellent full-page reproductions of 29 paintings, 17 drawings and four sculptures produced by the influential American Abstract Expressionist (b. 1904) from 1939 to 1985, including many of his well-known studies of distorted female figures as well as examples of his pure gestural abstractions. Two substantial critical essays exploring the influence of de Kooning's working environments in New York and East Hampton on the thematic and stylistic progression of his oeuvre are supplemented by a discussion of the artist's innovative synthesis of drawing and painting techniques and selections from his correspondence with his long-term patrons Joseph and Olga Hirshhorn.
