A scholarly study of the flourishing of Portuguese art during the 18th century, this catalogue features fine illustrations and individual examinations of 119 diverse decorative pieces, ecclesiastical objects and other works drawn from Portuguese collections (most of them previously documented in the catalogue of the 1991 Brussels exhibition Triomphe du Baroque), including furniture, silver and porcelain tableware, jewelry, liturgical vestments, scientific instruments, ceramic murals, and sculptures and paintings by both Portuguese and foreign artisans and artists. Eleven essays (three of them published in the 1991 volume) discuss historical developments in Portugal and elsewhere in Europe over the course of the 18th century along with such topics as the close cultural and religious ties between Rome and Lisbon during the period, the extensive patronage of Italian sculptors under Dom Joao V, the commissioning of lavish jewelry and table services by Portuguese aristocrats, and the program to reconstruct Lisbon following the earthquake of 1755.
