GUIDO CAGNACCI. Ed. by Daniele Benati and Marco Bona Castellotti. Museo Civico, Museo della Citta, Rimini, 1993. Published by Electa, Milan. 208 pp. with 128 ills. (77 col.). 28 x 25 cm. LC 93-232720 ISBN 8843543970 In Italian.
Thoroughly documenting the first important exhibition devoted to Italian painter Cagnacci (1601-1663), this scholarly catalogue presents full-page reproductions, detail illustrations and extensive analyses of 45 canvases that include allegorical compositions, numerous interpretations of biblical themes, and sensuously naturalistic renderings of Cleopatra, Lucretia and other female figures, the stylistically diverse works reflecting the influence of Caravaggio, Guercino and Reni. Seven essays discuss the progression of Cagnacci's career from his years in Rimini to his late sojourns in Venice and at the Viennese imperial court, examining the evolution of the painter's oeuvre in the context of early 17th-century art in Romagna, describing his commissions for religious paintings, and tracing the critical reception of his work.
