MANIFESTE: UNE HISTOIRE PARALLELE, 1960-1990 (Manifest: A Parallel History, 1960-1990). Centre Georges Pompidou, Musee national d'art moderne/Centre de creation industrielle, Paris, 1993. 264 pp. with 131 ills. (86 col.). 30 x 24 cm. LC 94-111080 ISBN 2858507333 In French.
Examining the achievements of major European painters whose independent artistic courses, well established before the advent of Pop art, Minimalism and other movements of the 1960s, remained largely uninfluenced by the avant-garde trends of the past three decades, this catalogue presents some 90 diverse paintings and other works produced from the 1960s through the 1980s by Alechinsky, Bacon, Burri, Dubuffet, Hantai, Riopelle, Soulages, Tapies and 55 other well-known figures. Eight substantial interviews with curators, critics and artists that illuminate the character and repercussions of changes in art and the art world over the period (particularly in Paris) are accompanied by good reproductions of the exhibited works (all from the Pompidou's collection) and a chronology of representative exhibitions from 1960 to 1990 that highlights the continued inclusion of the featured artists in international group shows.
