Examining the distinctive oeuvre of Belgian-born French artist and poet Michaux (1899-1984), a pioneering figure in the evolution of such avant-garde movements as Tachism and Art Informel, this catalogue features good reproductions of nearly 200 watercolors, drawings and paintings reflecting the innovative techniques and visionary themes explored by the artist throughout his career, presenting early works composed of glowing pictographic forms set against black grounds, phantasmagoric figure studies and portraits from the 1940s, and gestural and biomorphic abstractions inspired by his experiments with hallucinogenic drugs in the 1950s and 60s. Augmented by four reprinted critical texts and a 1966 interview with the artist, four essays discuss the relationship between Michaux's visual and verbal imagery, the interplay of figuration and abstraction in his work, and the links between his experiences on mescaline and his artistic and literary creations.
