A scholarly examination of medieval Russian art and its relationship to Byzantine pictorial traditions, this catalogue features fine color reproductions and lengthy analyses of 96 works selected from the holdings of the State Russian Museum, including numerous icon paintings and embroidered textiles dating chiefly from the 15th and 16th centuries as well as carved sculptures and devotional plaques, liturgical vessels, and other objects. Ten essays discuss such topics as the doctrines informing Byzantine views of religious iconography, the evolution of Russian culture prior to the emergence of the centralized state, the development of regional schools of painting, and modern art historical perspectives on the Russian Orthodox icon.
