Accompanying an exhibition organized in conjunction with the visit of Pope John Paul II to Denver in 1993, this well-illustrated catalogue documents 124 works from the Vatican's holdings (most related to the life of Saint Peter, his tomb, and the history of the basilica of Saint Peter in Rome) along with 88 diverse pieces from churches and museums throughout Italy, the selection including processional crosses, reliquaries, papal medallions, vestments and many other liturgical objects as well as paintings, sculptures, prints and architectural drawings by Bernini, Reni, Ghirlandaio, Durer, Piranesi, Borromini and other artists. Seven brief essays discuss such topics as the architectural evolution of Saint Peter's, the historical significance of the religious pilgrimage, and the role of art in the evangelical activities of the early Christian church.
