Presenting a detailed study of the diverse oeuvre of German artist Wollheim, a central figure in the progressive art communities of Dusseldorf and Berlin before his flight from Germany in 1933, this substantial catalogue features fine reproductions of more than 200 paintings and works on paper produced from 1915 to 1970, ranging from portraits and critical depictions of German society that reflect the influence of Otto Dix and other Neue Sachlichkeit artists to elaborate surrealist treatments of epic and religious themes. Augmented by a biographical text and a catalogue raisonne of 785 paintings by Wollheim, nine essays include assessments of the artist's achievements as a painter and printmaker, discussions of pivotal stages in his career and analyses of individual works. Please note that a condensed, paperbound edition of this title is available (see Worldwide 900398).
