JESS: A GRAND COLLAGE, 1951-1993. Michael Auping et al. Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, 1993. 248 pp. with 150 ills. (96 col.). 26 x 29 cm. LC 92-41674 ISBN 0914782851 In English.
An in-depth examination of the individualistic oeuvre of San Francisco artist Jess (Burgess Collins, b. 1923), this catalogue presents excellent reproductions of some 60 paintings (ranging from nature-based abstractions and interpretations of literary themes to heavily impastoed "translations" of book illustrations and photographs) and of 23 dense figurative collages composed of jigsaw puzzle pieces and found images from popular and art historical sources. Augmented by an interview with the artist, three essays include a lengthy critical overview of his largely reclusive career, analyses of his enigmatic works, and a discussion of the reciprocal influences between the painter and his long-term companion, poet Robert Duncan.
