Exploring the challenge to traditional modes of artistic expression integral to the Dada, Fluxus, Conceptual and other avant-garde movements, this catalogue documents a wide-ranging exhibition of more than 400 chiefly postwar paintings, sculptural objects, photographs, text-based images, installations and other diverse pieces by some 50 prominent international figures, among them Malevich, Duchamp, Dubuffet, Klein, Maciunas, Kaprow, Beuys, Viola, Boltanski, Turrell, Kruger and Kabakov. Fine illustrations of selected works are accompanied by an extensive array of excerpts from writings by and interviews with the featured artists as well as from texts by Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, William S. Burroughs and other experimental authors.
