THE ART OF CHARLES PRENDERGAST FROM THE COLLECTIONS OF THE WILLIAMS COLLEGE MUSEUM OF ART & MRS. CHARLES PRENDERGAST. Nancy Mowll Mathews et al. Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown, 1993. 120 pp. with 132 ills. (20 col.). 28 x 22 cm. LC 93-22826 ISBN 0913697168 In English.
A detailed study of the individualistic body of work created by American artist Prendergast (1863-1948) following his successful early career as a framemaker, this catalogue documents with illustrations and frequently lengthy commentaries some 70 pieces dating from the 1910s through the 1940s, including watercolors, sculptures, drawings and decorative objects along with many of the paintings of religious scenes and medieval and folk subjects produced by the artist on carved gessoed panels. Two essays chronicle Prendergast's career, describe his adaptation of Italian Renaissance techniques, and examine the evolution of his deliberately primitivist style and archaic themes, noting affinities with the Neo-Impressionist works of his brother Maurice.
