GEORGE PLATT LYNES: PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE KINSEY INSTITUTE. Bruce Weber et al. Grey Art Gallery and Study Center, New York University, 1993. Organized by Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction, Indiana University, Bloomington. Coinciding with a traveling exhibition of 130 vintage photographs by American artist Lynes (1907-1955) but not specifically documenting the show, this publication presents 80 works dating from 1930 to 1954 that include portraits of prominent artists and literary figures, fashion and dance photographs, and many examples of the elegant studies of male nudes for which the artist is now best known. Full-page reproductions are accompanied by two essays that discuss Lynes's links to avant-garde art circles in France, his successful commercial career in New York, and the significance of his homoerotic images in the context of the cultural climate of the early postwar period.
