VLADIMIR TATLIN: RETROSPEKTIVE (Vladimir Tatlin: Retrospective). Ed. by Anatolij Strigalev and Jurgen Harten. Stadtische Kunsthalle, Dusseldorf, 1993. Organized in association with Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Moscow et al. Published by DuMont Buchverlag, Cologne. 416 pp. with 571 ills. (72 col.). 28 x 23 cm. Accompanying an extensive exhibition of paintings and drawings by Tatlin selected mainly from public collections in Russia, this major review of the career and oeuvre of the pioneering Russian Constructivist (1885-1953) presents good reproductions of nearly 200 representative works that include early Cubist-influenced figure studies; muted still lifes and landscapes from the 1940s; designs for theater sets and costumes and for ceramics, furniture and other utilitarian objects; and three of the influential abstract reliefs Tatlin produced in the 1910s, almost all of which have been lost or destroyed. A substantial critical essay and an account of the recent reconstruction of Tatlin's seminal Model for a Monument to the Third International (1920) are supplemented by a selectively illustrated catalogue raisonne of more than 1300 works attributed to the artist.
