Presenting a broad review of the rich artistic and architectural history of the Westphalian bishopric of Munster from the time of Charlemagne to the present day, this voluminous catalogue documents with illustrations and substantial commentaries more than 500 works drawn chiefly from the holdings of the Landesmuseum, the selection encompassing illuminated manuscripts and a vast array of crucifixes, reliquaries, vestments and other ecclesiastical objects as well as sculptures, paintings and prints on biblical themes dating primarily from the 15th to the 17th century. Seven well-illustrated scholarly essays discussing such topics as the history of the diocese, the evolution of the Church's attitude toward artistic images and the production of liturgical manuscripts are supplemented by three substantial texts examining church architecture in the medieval, Baroque and modern periods.
