Exploring the role of social criticism and political activism in contemporary art, this two-part catalogue showcases a diverse array of public and museum installations, sculptures, photo-based compositions, paintings and other works (most specifically created for the exhibition) by 29 predominantly Canadian and American artists and collaborative teams, including Dennis Adams, Christian Boltanski, Genevieve Cadieux, Melvin Charney, Leon Golub, Hans Haacke, Alfredo Jaar, Marcel Odenbach, Adrian Piper, Cheri Samba, Barbara Steinman and Jeff Wall. Thirteen wide-ranging essays discussing political, moral and artistic issues surrounding the creation and display of socially engaged works are supplemented by statements by the featured artists or texts selected to illuminate their concerns.
