Providing a fine pictorial survey of the distinctive abstract oeuvre of prominent German artist Uecker (b. 1930), this catalogue features full-page reproductions of more than 100 paintings, sculptures and drawings dating from 1956 to 1992, among them roughly textured monochromatic oils and many of the wall-mounted and freestanding compositions covered with dense patterns of protruding nails for which the artist is best known. A lengthy critical essay traces Uecker's career and his explorations of structure and optical effects, discussing in particular detail his involvement in the 1950s and 60s with the experimental Zero group founded in Dusseldorf by Otto Piene and Heinz Mack.
