Reappraising Mengs's achievements through an examination of the extensive body of paintings he produced for British patrons, this catalogue presents fine reproductions of 27 oils and 14 drawings by the German Neo-Classical artist along with several paintings, prints and drawings after his works, the selection including numerous Grand Tour portraits of British aristocrats as well as depictions of religious and mythological scenes. Scholarly commentaries on the exhibited works supplement a substantial essay detailing Mengs's contacts with British artists and patrons during his highly successful career in Dresden, Madrid and Rome and discussing the significance of individual commissions in the context of the artist's central role in the Neo-Classical movement.
