Documenting the contributions of Ukrainian artists to avant-garde movements of the 1910s and 20s, this catalogue presents fine full-page reproductions of some 80 paintings and drawings by Kasimir Malevich, Alexandra Exter, El Lissitzky, Sonia Delaunay, Alexander Archipenko and 20 chiefly lesser-known figures, many of whose works were dispersed or destroyed during the Stalin era. Four essays provide a historical review of mutual influences in Russian and Ukrainian art and profiles of the featured artists, discussing the impact of Cubism, Constructivism and other international trends on the development of their diverse styles and tracing the frequently vibrant coloring and primitivist imagery of their works to Ukrainian folk art traditions.
