The first major survey of the career of noted Native North American artist Davidson (b. 1946), this catalogue presents some 100 diverse works produced from 1968 to 1992, including carved masks, maquettes for totem poles, jewelry, prints, paintings and other pieces incorporating the abstracted figural motifs of traditional Northwest Coast Haida art. Excellent reproductions of the featured works are interspersed among three essays that discuss the historical and ceremonial contexts of Haida carving, trace the evolution of Davidson's oeuvre beginning with his early years as an apprentice to Bill Reid, and describe his prominent role in the revitalization of Haida art forms.
