A notable study of the multifaceted oeuvre of prominent French sculptor Cesar (Cesar Baldaccini, b. 1921), this catalogue features excellent reproductions of 126 works that include many of the massive block sculptures composed of hydraulically crushed automobiles for which the artist is best known as well as examples of his abstract assemblages of scrap iron; intricate animal and insect figures constructed from found metal objects; organic poured forms created with expanding polyurethane foam; and "murals" of compressed boxes, baskets and other materials. An illustrated biographical chronology and an interview with the artist augment five critical essays (one reprinted) examining the significance of Cesar's inventive techniques, the influence of his radical compression and expansion sculptures, and the principles underlying his explorations of non-traditional materials.
