PIETRO DAMINI, 1592-1631: PITTURA E CONTRORIFORMA (Pietro Damini, 1592-1631: Painting and Counter-Reformation). Ed. by Davide Banzato and Pier Luigi Fantelli. Palazzo della Ragione, Padua, 1993. Organized by Comune di Padova, Assessorato alla Cultura e ai Beni Culturali et al. Published by Electa, Milan. 228 pp. with 196 ills. (13 col.). 24 x 23 cm. LC 94-154702 ISBN 8843544845 In Italian.
Accompanying the first major exhibition of Damini's work, this catalogue documents some 40 individual and multi-panel paintings by the lesser-known Paduan artist along with twelve oils by Palma il Giovane, Padovanino and other figures of the period, the selection consisting primarily of religious and allegorical compositions. Detailed commentaries on the featured paintings supplement five well-illustrated essays that trace Damini's life and artistic development, examine his religious commissions in the context of Counter-Reformation restrictions on the visual arts, and analyze an important work by Veronese completed by Damini.
