Illuminating a pivotal stage in the movement to establish photography as a fine art medium in the United States, this catalogue presents good reproductions of the 87 photogravures and four gelatin silver prints (portraits, figure studies, landscapes and genre compositions) published in Camera Notes along with reference illustrations of the 267 halftone images that appeared in the influential periodical, issued quarterly by the Camera Club of New York from 1897 to 1903 and edited until 1902 by celebrated American artist Stieglitz (1864-1946). Biographical profiles of Gertrude Kasebier, Rudolf Eickemeyer, F. Holland Day, Robert Demachy, Edward Steichen and some 45 other American and European artists who contributed to Camera Notes supplement a lengthy text that explores in detail the history, production and content of the journal, discussing its vigorous promotion of Pictorialist aesthetics, its advancement of photogravure techniques, and its significance as the predecessor of Stieglitz's well-known periodical Camera Work.
