Provides a comprehensive pictorial overview of the disturbing oeuvre of Austrian artist Schwarzkogler (1940-1969), a key figure in the Vienna Actionist movement whose performance pieces, often staged in clinically white rooms, presented tableaux of ritualistic self-mutilation and violation. Featuring reproductions of hundreds of photographs produced to document six "actions" created by Schwarzkogler in 1965 and 1966 and illustrations of numerous pages from his notebooks and sketchbooks, the catalogue includes a biographical text and eleven essays discussing the artist's development, the relationship of his works to those of other Vienna Actionists such as Gunter Brus, Hermann Nitsch and Otto Muehl, the role of photography in his performances, and the significance of his conceptual drawings. Please note that a condensed French-language edition of this title is currently available (see Worldwide 900394).
