Accompanying a display of some 70 paintings selected from the thousands of works presented in salon exhibitions in Lille, Douai, Valenciennes and other cities in northern France from the time of the Bourbon restoration through the July Monarchy, this scholarly catalogue includes reproductions and lengthy discussions of the featured canvases (primarily genre scenes, portraits and historical and religious tableaux), concise biographies of the artists (among them Boilly, Isabey, Gericault, Granet, Stubbs and many lesser-known painters) and five detailed essays examining the flourishing of art societies in the area, the organization of the salons, and the critical debates surrounding the shows. The second volume of the two-part catalogue provides an extensive record of works by more than 2200 artists that were included in salon exhibitions in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region during the period.
