AUGUSTUS VINCENT TACK: LANDSCAPE OF THE SPIRIT. Leslie Furth et al. Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., 1993. 144 pp. with 103 ills. (33 col.). 28 x 22 cm. LC 93-3596 ISBN 0943044197 In English.
Documenting the first major retrospective devoted to American painter Tack (1870-1949), this catalogue features reproductions of 56 canvases from the Phillips Collection's preeminent holdings of the artist's work, including portraits, religious tableaux and Impressionist landscapes as well as many visionary nature-based abstractions bearing stylistic affinities to the compositions of such later painters as Milton Avery and Clyfford Still. Four essays provide a lengthy critical overview of Tack's career, a discussion of his links to John La Farge and 19th-century artistic traditions, an examination of his achievements as a muralist, and a chronicle of his long-term relationship with his principal patron, art critic and collector Duncan Phillips.
