OP MARK TANSEY. Judi Freeman et al. Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1993. Published in association with Chronicle Books, San Francisco. 116 pp. with 62 ills. (33 col.). 24 x 25 cm. LC 93-18853 ISBN 0811804682 In English.
Reviews the distinctive body of work produced from 1979 to 1992 by American painter Tansey (b. 1949), featuring reproductions of 22 recent "toner drawings" and 26 monochromatic narrative oils in which photorealistically rendered figures are positioned in subtly surrealistic situations, many of the pieces embodying commentaries on modern artists and critical theories. In addition to a lengthy essay evaluating Tansey's working methods and explicating the multifaceted themes of the exhibited paintings, the catalogue includes a statement by the artist and a short story by avant-garde French novelist and filmmaker Alain Robbe-Grillet, a central figure in a 1981 painting by Tansey.
