JEAN DUBUFFET, 1943-1963: PAINTINGS, SCULPTURES, ASSEMBLAGES. James T. Demetrion et al. Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., 1993. Published by Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington, D.C. 168 pp. with 105 ills. (98 col.). 29 x 24 cm. LC 93-20414 ISBN 1560982985 In English.
Surveying paintings, mixed-media compositions and a small selection of sculptures produced by Dubuffet (1901-1985) during the first two decades of his mature career, this catalogue showcases 98 innovative portraits, figure studies and collage-like abstractions executed in the expressively primitivistic style that established the French artist as a major figure in postwar painting. Includes fine reproductions of the featured works (many accompanied by statements by Dubuffet or critical commentaries), a personal reminiscence by a longtime friend of the artist, and two essays discussing his caricature portraits of the 1940s and his iconoclastic views of art and culture.
