FRANCESCO DI GIORGIO ARCHITETTO (Francesco di Giorgio as Architect). Ed. by Francesco Paolo Fiore and Manfredo Tafuri. Palazzo Pubblico, Siena, 1993. Organized by Comune di Siena et al. Published by Electa, Milan. 426 pp. with 494 ills. (59 col.). 28 x 26 cm. LC 93-204421 ISBN 8843543989 In Italian.
Complementing the catalogue of a concurrent exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1439-1501) and his contemporaries (see Worldwide 24094), this scholarly volume thoroughly documents the innovative architectural oeuvre of the multi-talented Sienese artist, architect, theorist and engineer, presenting photographs, drawings, prints and paintings of 18 major projects that include the ducal palaces in Urbino and Gubbio, the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie al Calcinaio near Cortona and numerous fortresses throughout the Marches. Individual essays on the featured works are augmented by three lengthy analyses of Francesco's designs for religious, civic and military architecture and by six texts discussing his critical fortunes and his important treatises, which influenced Leonardo and many later architects and engineers.
