A major study of the achievements of Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1439-1501) as a painter and sculptor and of his central role in the flourishing of Renaissance art in Siena, this scholarly catalogue features excellent reproductions and lengthy analyses of some 30 paintings, drawings, medallions, reliefs and sculptures in bronze and wood by Francesco along with more than 70 works by other Quattrocento Sienese artists, including Donatello, Lorenzo Vecchietta and Neroccio de' Landi. A lengthy and extensively illustrated reappraisal of the character and significance of Francesco's work is supplemented by seven essays discussing such topics as the patronage of Sienese artists by Pope Pius II and Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino; the collaborations of Francesco with Luca Signorelli and other artists; and the production of illuminated manuscripts by Girolamo da Cremona, Liberale da Verona and other miniaturists active in Siena. (The catalogue of a concurrent exhibition devoted to Francesco's work as an architect is available as Worldwide 24095.)
