Surveying the influential achievements of the three most prominent members of a family of artists who dominated 18th-century Bolognese painting, this catalogue presents reproductions and brief discussions of 54 paintings and oil sketches and 57 drawings by Ubaldo Gandolfi (1728-1781), his brother Gaetano (1734-1802), and Gaetano's son Mauro (1764-1834), the selection encompassing portraits and figure studies as well as numerous religious and mythological compositions. Two introductory essays review the artists' separate but interrelated careers and examine the contemporary reception of their work in the context of the social, political and artistic turmoil of their time.
