Provides an extensive study of the brief life and neglected oeuvre of American artist Hotchkiss (ca. 1833-1869), a student and close associate of Asher B. Durand who spent much of his career in Italy producing atmospheric landscapes, nature studies and views of ancient ruins. Prefaced by an examination of Hotchkiss as an exemplar of the 19th-century American expatriate artist, the catalogue features good reproductions of 44 oils and nearly 30 watercolors arranged in 15 thematic groups, each accompanied by a concise critical text.
