Examining a lesser-known aspect of the oeuvre of celebrated French architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc (1814-1879), this catalogue surveys the numerous mountain views produced by the artist during his early travels through the Pyrenees in the 1830s and his journeys to the Alps late in his career, presenting illustrations of some 120 watercolors and drawings that range from panoramas to detailed studies of geological formations and glaciers. Nine texts include discussions of Viollet-le-Duc's scientific and architectural interest in the structure of mountains, chronicles of his alpine tours, a description of the architecture of his Lausanne house (1874-1876), and a series of writings by the architect addressing issues related to flood control and the management of mountain resources.
