Published in conjunction with an exhibition celebrating the significant artistic legacy of the brief pontificate of Sixtus V from 1585 to 1590, this massive catalogue focuses primarily on the extensive painting and sculpture projects undertaken in Rome during the Pope's reign, examining in detail dozens of works that range from major fresco cycles for the Vatican Library, the Lateran Palace, Santa Maria Maggiore and other sites to individual sculptures and altarpiece paintings commissioned for churches and public buildings throughout Rome. Sixteen essays discussing such topics as the character of Sistine iconography, the organization of the artistic program of Sixtus V, and the Pope's role in religious and cultural developments of the time are accompanied by substantial analyses of the featured paintings, sculptures, drawings, coins and manuscripts and by biographies of Andrea Lilio, Cesare Nebbia, Giovanni Guerra and some 260 other artists involved in the projects.
