MEISTERWERKE MASSENHAFT: DIE BILDHAUERWERKSTATT DES NIKLAUS WECKMANN UND DIE MALEREI IN ULM UM 1500 (Masterpieces Abundant: The Sculpture Workshop of Niklaus Weckmann and Painting in Ulm around 1500). Wurttembergisches Landesmuseum, Stuttgart, 1993. 516 pp. with 631 ills. (226 col.). 32 x 24 cm. ISBN 3929055252 In German.
Accompanying an exhibition of some 100 carved wooden sculptures, panel paintings and other works produced in Ulm in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, this lavishly illustrated catalogue provides an extensive study of the role of Ulm painters and of Weckmann's prolific sculpture workshop in establishing the city as a center of Late Gothic altarpiece production. Reproductions of the exhibited works and of hundreds of additional pieces accompany 36 scholarly essays examining an array of general and specialized topics, including religious, political and cultural developments in Ulm during the period, the belated attribution of Weckmann's influential oeuvre, the organization and output of his workshop, the materials, tools and techniques employed by Swabian sculptors and painters of the time, the achievements of Bartholomaus Zeitblom, Jorg Stocker, Martin Schaffner and other prominent Ulm painters, and the formal and ornamental features of altarpieces produced in the region.
