Providing a broad overview of the expressionistic oeuvre of French artist Chabaud, this catalogue features excellent reproductions of 75 paintings, 40 drawings and watercolors and four sculptures produced primarily during the artist's years in Montmartre prior to World War I, including boldly rendered studies of Parisian nightlife, brothel scenes and city views that reflect his leading role in the rise of Fauvism. Four critical essays are augmented by a detailed biographical chronology and a lively 1926 text by Chabaud drawing parallels between painting and literature.
