JEAN POUGNY. Musee d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris, 1993. Published by Paris-Musees. 212 pp. with 201 ills. (85 col.). 28 x 23 cm. ISBN 2879001145 In French.
Extensively reviewing the career and oeuvre of Russian-born French artist Pougny (Ivan Puni, 1892-1956), an influential figure in the St. Petersburg avant garde during the 1910s who settled in Paris in 1923, this scholarly catalogue documents some 200 works that include innovative Suprematist relief paintings and drawings, Constructivist compositions and Cubist still lifes as well as a selection of intimiste interiors and figure studies from the 1940s and 50s. Individual commentaries on many of the featured works and an anthology of critical texts by the artist dating from the late 1910s and early 20s augment five essays examining Pougny's impact on early 20th-century Russian art, his application of avant-garde theories to decorative art and design, and his artistic activities in Berlin from 1920 to 1923.
